Why fake news sell and truth cannot

Sep 28, 2025 • By Tatenda Nemacha

lies never sounded better

It’s a sad state for humanity, where the truth is often overshadowed by false news, which sells like cupcakes. We see this on our feeds, social media, and even our very own news channels aren’t safe from the phenomenon.

But why is this so? Have we as humanity lost our urgency for truth?, Have we gained an appetite for the counterfeit? Have we lost our morale? Unfortunately, it won’t surprise anyone, because the answer is yes, we have.

Let’s look back

How exactly did we get to this point? We have to look back far back into the early 19th century, this is when the public began to take the media seriously. So you can easily say that fake news was always there, but this should not come to us as a surprise because it’s expected, but the difference then was that news was written, screened, and published by the news outlets, so there was a larger filter of regulations, control, and laws, and legal action against the parties involved. Fast track to the year 2025, and anyone with a mobile device and Wi-Fi can do just as much damage, if not even more than before.

Fake news has always be a weapon

Events I can think of at the top of my head that carried fake news in the past, well before I was born, thanks to my history classes, were mainly about World War 2, famous inventions, presidents, and the royal families. I guess that fake news had a thing for wars. Again, this is very expected as false news was also a part of the enemy’s strategy on the battlefield. There were false assassination attempts, fake meeting gatherings, fake records, and documentation, all to deceive the enemy and weaken their momentum and trust.

And nowadays, the motives somewhat have remained the same, even though we have no moon landers, no out-of-this-world man-made inventions, and if you are reading this in the year 2024-2025, yes, there are wars and assassinations, sadly to say the least. And wow! There have been some incredible lies, fake news, and rumours regarding Ukraine, Russia, Israel, the DRC, and Iran. We are also seeing many other countries and political groups getting swept into this.

You’re probably not going to read this...

My conclusion

Fake news is spreading like cupcakes because gone are the days of only news outlets, newspapers, and news publishers. With the click of a button, any random person can create a fake identity, a fake story, and make a whole living out of lies because they can fuel the fire of controversy, theories, and contentious arguments. They have understood that deep down, as humanity, our virtues have been on a decline, we love to react with hate, and we are emotional. And at the end of the day, we all just validate our own opinions.

We should defund stupidity, make podcast equipment expensive, and reward good journalism. Above all, let’s be vigilant.
