The bottom-of-the-barrel type of device

Ever had an experience with a tech product or gadget that was so underwhelming? I am talking about the bottom of the barrel. Your money was probably wasted on components cheaply made, a live wire, or, to the extreme, having your device blow up in your face.

If you are like me, then you probably have felt some level of this disappointment, and trust me, nobody should be in this conundrum, especially at the expense of our hard-earned money.

That’s why I have come up with a list of products I have tried and experienced firsthand that have been good value for money.

The buy-it-once type of device

No. 1 A smartphone with a decent chip

Let’s not get carried away by the hype and buy the latest phone every year. Keep it simple, buy a phone that will outlive its competitors. Most of us only ask if it passes the eye test, but what if I told you the inside (brain) of the phone matters most?Avoid Samsung’s with an A class have numbers lower than 20; phones under A 20 will leave you crying, so since we are on a budget, stick between A 20 and above. For iPhone, any iPhone after the iPhone SE second gen is good, as it comes with an A13 Bionic chip. iPhones nowadays are the same phone, just with a different body, so don’t feel pressured to always buy what’s trendy.

A good power bank

Whether there is load-shedding, testing your phone’s battery limits by playing a game or watching a movie, or you forgot to charge your phone. A power bank can come in handy. I recommend power banks from 20,000 mAh and above. These will allow your phone a full charge multiple times and usually have a decent amount of ports. And make sure they have fast charging.

Quality headsets/earphones

We all love a moment of peace, leisure, and good tones. That’s why I had to mention one of my favourite gadgets. I came across the Polaroid (Digital Hybrid Noise Cancelling Bluetooth Headphone). My brother had them for two years, and they work like a charm. My brother also had earphones, the Wireless Earbuds - PWS119 they also work like a charm. I decide to buy them for his birthday and for myself, and they are as good as it gets from the sound, bass, feel, hardware and quality.

Quality cable

Invest in quality cables. I repeat, invest in quality cables. Cables are the most crucial components for all our devices, so don’t be a cheapskate. Most of us neglect them, but you only notice how essential they are when they aren’t working. These I recommend from the original store or other alternative trusted brands with a reputation like mine from Dixon, from Cash Crusaders.

Quality Laptop

Yes, everywhere you look, laptops look expensive, but let me put you on a secret. There are many certified companies that refurbish laptops, and they ensure quality and original components. And the best part is you get a warranty and support at a low, low price, so think smart and get the laptop you’ve always wanted, refurbished.

Watch

When in the market, go simple and reliable. Don’t fall for the advertising gimmicks. Most of the things that these new watches do you will never be used and will just collect dust. So, for time, date, steps, stopwatch, and laps, if that’s all you’re looking for, buy a Casio, Fossil, Omega, or Seiko. If you are in good fitness, buy a Fitbit or a pre-owned Garmin or Samsung watch.

hard drive (SSD)

You might read “Hard drive” and assume you don’t need it, but the truth of the matter is that all space runs out. And since we are on a budget, we wouldn’t want our files and contents missing or getting corrupted. That’s why it’s quintessential to get a hard drive that works well. Don’t get a normal hard drive because they are slower in reading and writing. Go for the solid-state drive, which is more modern, faster, and durable. I recommend the SSDs from SanDisk and Kingston, and if you have the funds, get it from Samsung.

Hope this list helps in your next purchase. Buy once and never look back.
