“Minimalism is the new thing”, Gen Z says
Consumerism
We are in the era of consumerism, where more is better and where quantity outweighs quality. It’s as if we always want more clothes, the newest gadgets, and whatever is trending.
For some time, consumerism has been the trend, but recently, it has declined among the very people who created the hype: Gen Z. Many Gen Z’s have fallen out of love with consumerism, and now they are leaning into minimalism, which is the act of removing excess and living simply.
But why the fallout?
Maybe they are tired of keeping up with the Joneses by always buying clothes and jewellery that they really can’t afford and that, in a matter of weeks, will be out of style or collecting dust. They are tired of looking a certain way to impress people who couldn’t care less about them, and let’s face it, we all have been victims of consumerism. We have found ourselves buying what’s in style and never wearing it, buying a device we can’t afford, like the new iPhone, buying things to stay relevant, and regretting a purchase seconds after making it.

Realisation
Gen Z has recently clocked that that lifestyle only left them broke and miserable, and it made them doomed from the get-go. They are choosing to buy things that last. You buy it once, and it lasts forever, more like peace of mind. They aren’t willing to spend their lives away anymore by shopping again and again. Gen Z has understood that nobody can outspend their problems, and they have decided to take better ownership and care for their state of mind, peace, and their wallets.
One of the ways they have achieved this is by being minimalists, cutting out waste, and keeping things simple. Regarding fashion, they have cut off the hype by thrift shopping, which is shopping for good-quality clothes that have been preloved. Regarding social pressure, many have decided to cut off or limit their social media intake, and some have decided to get dumb phones. Others have gone back to the basics by reading books again, having hobbies, and learning new skills, like taking an extra cooking class or learning a new instrument.
Being frugal is now in style, there is now hype to being a responsible person, and a minimalist lifestyle is the new thing now, just ask Gen Z.
