I thought we were only supposed to listen to gospel music…

The Christian Pedestal

Are you a Christian? Or are you someone who is walking in the path of becoming a Christian? You probably have someone that you look up to, someone whose journey with God inspires you. That’s me. I look up to the way people live their lives for Jesus, the way they preach about Him, and how they want to bring others closer to Him, too, so they can experience this one-of-a-kind love.

The court- how we judge our Christian Role Models

But there is a burden, an unspoken higher stool that we place our Christian role models on; we expect them not only to be great, but also to be perfect. And when they seem to do something contradicting or that does not seem to be very Christ-like, we withdraw not only from them but from the path with Christ. For some reason, your favourite Christian influencer listening to some secular artist is a good reason to abandon the religion. We sum up this excuse based on a single action and completely turn a blind eye. We turn away from the teachings that tell us to lead with love.

Expectations vs Reality

We judge these people so harshly as if they were not human too. Yes, they have influence, and yes, they are supposed to lead in a certain way, but we have to extend grace. We have to understand that everyone’s journey is different, and we should not give so much power to dictate the kind of relationship we have with Christ. We also need to find our own footing with the Word and the Holy Spirit so that we are not shaken by seeing someone hang out with someone we don’t necessarily agree with.

I can’t see my own flaws

But the downfall of many of us is that we are quick to judge, to see the speck in the other person’s eye and not the log in our own. And it becomes so much easier to fall into a trap of performance rather than authentic connection. People can wear the right clothes and say the right things while having vile hearts, and we would love them for that.
