Firstly, if a Christian is asking this, then I am already terrified (pun intended). What a question, what a horror. Halloween is around the corner, and what a time it is to be scaring each other with such questions. Okay, let me give you a break. Maybe the question is out of curiosity, maybe it’s out of arrogance, or perhaps you love candy a little too much. Either way, let’s tackle the question.
The history
To begin with this horror story, we have to go all the way to the early 90s. Halloween was formerly known as a pagan religious celebration called Samhain, an Ancient Celtic festival. The founders believed that on the 1st of November, the dead would reappear and roam the streets; it’s giving apocalypse. This would be followed by bonfires, dances and sacrifices to appease the spirits, and all this would be happening at the dawn of the night, very spooky.
Modern times
Fast-forward to these modern times, and the shenanigans are still happening. More costumes, more tricks and treats, and to be honest, our generation has become amused by Halloween, from the parties, gigs and festivals happening on this day and the fact that it’s now an international holiday.
But the Bible is outdated, they claim. Oh, really!

Devil worshippers
Have you ever wondered about the deeper meaning of this, like, are you now one of those? Devil worshippers! I would like to say no, but then I would be pushing it. Dressing as ghosts and devils and decorating your houses with blood, horns, and summoning spells. That should sound like worship, worship towards the Devil. How else would the devil want to be worshipped?
Halloween already looks like a ritual, a cult and a pagan celebration, but you, I mean we, we have been so deceived and desensitized that this show has been going on for far too long. Have you ever thought, like, does God approve of this wickedness? I bet you the devil is delighted; he is smiling from beneath with a smirk on his face.
In the past Halloween was for the dead, and nowadays it’s for entertainment. Don’t be fooled; look around – its roots still remain. Jesus reminds us that the dead should bury the dead, so basically if we are alive, we should focus on life, or at least things that bring forth life, and not on the things that bring forth death. And for Christians, Jesus is our life.
And if you can think about it, if there really is a Devil that Halloween so much honours, like Satan, then it must be true that God exists because they coexist. Why would you choose to deliberately walk in darkness?
So that’s the bigger picture. What will you do while others are in darkness and glorifying evil on Halloween? Will you participate? Or will you step into the light? and give glory to his name, the one and only living God.
